My time with Maharishi - an extract from The
‘Himalayas to Hollywood’ a Personal Account of Maharishi’s Early Days.
By Charles F. Lutes, As Told to Martin Zucker.

An
event on that trip I will never forget was the time we were racing to catch
the ferry in Port Angeles to take us over to Victoria on Vancouver Island.
We were running late and had to make the ferry in order for Maharishi
to keep an important speaking engagement.
We
were still a distance out of town and I figured that we would have to drive a
hundred miles an hour or more to make the ferry. I
told Maharishi.
“Then
why not drive that fast,” he said matter-of-factly.
I
said to myself if the master thinks it will be okay then it must be.
So I stepped on the gas. Soon,
we were racing along at about 103 miles per hour down a long, long grade
through the mist and a beautiful pine forest.
I could see an intersection down the road and I started to slow for it.
“Why
go slower?” Maharishi wanted to
know.
I
explained what was up ahead.
He
then closed his eyes for a moment or two and said, “The road is clear, so
you keep driving fast.”
And
so whoosh, I went right through there. It
was clear. A little ways further
on we came to a section of the highway over looking the city and the docks.
I could see the ferry down below. I
checked my watch. The boat was
scheduled to leave in a couple of minutes and it would take us at least
fifteen to get there, I told Maharishi.
“Don’t
worry, you just go fast,” he said, calm as ever.
Down and down we went and drove right up on the dock and up onto the
boat. I no sooner got on than the
back gate went up and off we went. The
purser came down and said, “Today’s your lucky day, mister.”
“What
do you mean?” I said.
“Well,
the captain has been doing this run for about eighteen years and in all that
time he never has failed to leave the dock on the minute.
Today he has been standing on the bridge like he was in a trance.”
I
said something like, “How about that,” and gave him a
count-your-lucky-stars smile. Maharishi
in the seat next to me never said a word.
We got out, sat up on the deck and enjoyed the boat ride.
Maharishi,
of course, has abilities that are extraordinary by our normal standards.
But he never makes a show out of them and it is only rare that he
manifests these powers. He
certainly hasn't been given to wholesale displays of psychic or physical feats
such as other yogis do.....

Ayurveda. After many hundreds of
years of occupation, India lost much of the ancient art and science of
Ayurveda. (Ayurveda means
Knowledge of Life or SCIENCE of LIFE. Of
this, TM is part). Continued

Maharishi revived Ayurveda to its original thousands of years old
completeness and made it’s health benefits available to the west.
He
employed three of the most highly regarded Ayurveda doctors in India to pass
on their knowledge and skills for diagnosis and remedies for use around the
world.
Intelligence
and Perfect Health
‘When the
total intelligence of Natural Law—Veda—is lively in the individual
physiology, there is perfect synchrony between the functioning of every
individual cell and the holistic functioning of the body as a whole; and
between individual intelligence and Cosmic Intelligence.
In this state of complete integration, all thought and action are
spontaneously in harmony with Natural Law and the individual enjoys perfect
health.’ —Maharishi Mahesh
Yogi
Dr.
Ted Wallace, Managing
Director, Maharishi Ayurveda Products International (USA) said,
“The importance of good health cannot be overemphasized, as good health is
the foundation for our ability to fulfil our goals in life.
In Sanskrit, the word for health is Swasthya—from Swa, the Self and
Sthya, established. So the Vedic
definition of a healthy individual is one who is established in the Self, in
wholeness, which is the natural result of a pure, healthy and vital mind and
body.”
Being
established in the Self, is being established in the Transcendence, or
established in Being, as Maharishi used to say, or being established in the
Unified Field (quantumn physics) or as Maharishi later called it ‘that
Infinite Field of Creativity and Intelligence’.

Cooking Advice from Maharishi Ayurveda Products- Dal
-for vegetarians, beans, dals and lentils constitute an important source of
nutrition - they provide protein, complex carbohydrates, fibre and Vitamins.
Versatile and tasty, dals and lentils lend themselves to being used to
make salads, appetizers, soups, main dishes, sides and even dessert.
They work well with other foods such as grains, vegetables,
herbs and spices.
Mung
beans, split, with skins removed are
held to be
excellent for all three doshas. Easier
to digest than most other beans and dals, mung dal can be eaten everyday.
When cooked, mung dal takes on the consistency of porridge.
This dal is praised in Ayurvedic texts for its
nutritional value and ease of digestion.
Eight
useful tips for cooking with dals and lentils:
1.
Store dry beans and dals in dry, airtight containers at room temperature.
2.
Try and use dals and lentils within six months -- the older they get, the
longer they take to soak and cook because of lost moisture.
3.
Rinse several times before you cook.
4.
Some beans need soaking to aid the cooking process.
5.
Do not add salt or acidic ingredients like tomatoes or lemon juice until the
beans or dals are cooked.
6.
Ayurveda recommends eating beans, dals and lentils that are well cooked for
easy digestion.
7.
Adding spices such as cumin, black pepper and ginger to dals and beans helps
the process of digestion.

SUFFERING, 1957 to 2007 by Maharishi
In India circa 1957
1) “The devotee of the Almighty
cannot suffer. If he is found to
suffer, he cannot be said to be a devotee of God.
It
pains me when I find people suffering in the name of God and devotion.
I offer an open invitation to such aspirants and seekers of God.
I invite them to come out of their miserable devotion, and step into
the peaceful blissful chambers of Sadhana, blessed and illumined by my Master,
the divine radiance of Shri Guru Deva.
I invite them to put an end to
their sufferings and peacelessness and crown their day-to-day life with
success, peace and joy. Do not
waste time and life. Life is to
enjoy. So come on to the field of
all joy. The gates of all glories
of life are open for you. "Make
hay when the sun shines". Avail
the opportunity in hand and enjoy life to the fullest.”
2)
Somewhere, sometime between 1957 and 2007, “The Creator who created us did not
want us to suffer”.
3)
Press
conference in Holland 2007, "Jesus did not suffer.”
Ed. note, ‘Research
shows that when consciousness is high, (from continued regular practice of
TM), pain and suffering is low but tolerance increases and brain chemicals
associated with happiness increase.
’The
thing is to regularly shed more stress than we gain from our daily / weekly
activity. We do this with regular
meditation and avoid stress and fatigue as much as possible
Be
established in the Self, that field of Infinite Creativity and Intelligence,
as much as we are able to, (ie saturate the mind with the transcendence.)
IDEAL OF HUMAN LIFE
The following
beautiful sentence was given by Dr. B.D. Triguna, past President of
the All-India Ayurveda Congress and Director of the National Academy for
Ayurveda in India.
It is from a Vedic
text, depicting the ideal of human
life;-
·
We live for 100 years,
·
we hear the glory of God for 100 years,
·
we see the beauty of earth for 100
years,
·
our (physical) movement should be for
100 years,
·
we should be fully independent
for 100 years - not dependent on
anyone,
·
We
live a life of prosperity for 100 years and so much more than that'.

VEDIC SCIENCE - an overview, Something to think about!
The
thousands of years old Vedic Literature, widely scattered and believed for
many years by many scholars to be a collection of ancient man made
philosophies was revealed to be so much more by Maharishi’s Master, Guru
Dev.
One
of Maharishi’s greatest achievements was to bring out this knowledge for the
practical use of everyone around the world.
It
is the knowledge of the most fundamental level of Nature’s intelligence.
It is the knowledge of the Unified Field[1]
of quantumn physics, that modern psychology calls the Self.
Maharishi
has identified Universal
Consciousness as comprising everyone’s individual consciousness and so much
more.
This Unified field, this Universal
Consciousness, this Self, is a field of infinite creativity and infinite pure
intelligence. He described it as
an “ocean of consciousness in motion,
moving within its self, creating a dynamic structure within its eternal
silence”.
It
is intelligence in the form of vibrating energy that manifests the universe.
It does this by manifesting time and space from the absolute level of
the intelligent laws of nature that administer all of creation.
That
this dynamic universitality is within everyone is the most significant
discovery of our time.
Maharishi
has pointed out that through the proper use of the vibrations, of the Veda and
Vedic Literature, e.g. using correct mantras, the total potential of human
life is available to us through the laws of nature.
The
practical side of this science includes TM to bring life in harmony with all
the laws of nature and therefore bringing perfection to every area of life.
We do this by daily contacting this absolute level.
TM
is the most direct way for the fulfilment of this knowledge to the individual.
As a philosophy of life, it is supreme.
TM enables the awareness to effortlessly and naturally settle down to
its least excited state which is the transcendental field underlying all
creation. It therefore actualises
the highest ideals of life.

found people who made gifts to others or to charities reported they were
happier than those who didn't share, according to a report in Friday's issue
of the journal ‘Science’.
The
Bible counsels that it is better to give than to receive.
Science now agrees. People
who made gifts to others or to charities reported they were happier than folks
who did not. While previous studies have shown that having more money can increase
happiness, the researchers at the University
of British Columbia and Harvard University found that doing something for
others made one more happy and the
effect is big even with small acts of giving.
Giving, they found can make a big difference in our happiness.
Research found giving could involve money, time or special skills to
help other people. .

Pays to Play Nice another
Harvard Research study finds.
``It is a very positive message,'' said study author David
Rand. In general, the thing that
is most, sort of, rational and best for your own self-interest is to be
nice.''
The
study involved
100 Boston-area college students playing the same game repeatedly.
It
found that those who use punishments are losers and those who escalate
conflict very often wound up doomed.
The
players who punished their opponents the least, or not at all, made the most
money. Those who punished the most
made the least money. When faced
with a nasty opponent, turning the other cheek and continuing to
cooperate—or at least not handing out punishment—paid off more in the long
run, the study found. GCWP,

“Mind
Over Markets,”
April 19, 2004, Dow Jones &
Company, Inc. The
American Heart Association disclosed that obesity, a major cause of heart
disease, is growing fastest among people earning over $60,000 a year.
Another
study showed a possible antidote to the high blood pressure that afflicts
many, is Transcendental Meditation.
According
to a study published in the latest issue of the American
Journal of Cardiology, people with high blood pressure who learnt TM had a
23% lower death rate from all causes, and 30% lower from heart disease, than
those who learned other relaxation techniques or used drugs.
The
study, largely funded by the National Institutes of Health and led by Robert
Schneider, director of the Centre for Natural Medicine and Prevention at
Maharishi University of Management in Iowa, examined death rates of
participants in two studies an average of eight years later.
TM
is already being employed to treat patients with cardiovascular disease.
“The American Journal of
Cardiology study is consistent with what we have observed in our
research,” says Noel Bairey Merz, medical director of the Preventive Cardiac
Centre at Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in L.A. “We came to meditation as a
last resort,” she says, but it is “something that certainly can be
considered complementary to other good health-care therapies”.
Moreover, as Barron has observed last year (“Mind Over Markets,”
April 19, 2004), the technique may have other fringe benefits, including
helping some traders improve their performance. GCWP
